To the South of the Clouds
Upon the clouds
At the end of August 2003, I got on an airplane and sat at the back of it
. It was my first time on air. With a perturbed mind, I was flying up into the
blue. Soon, fear was took place by the joyful feeling, which seems to allow y
ou to grasp the cloud. The feeling, if they permitted me to open the window of
the plane, could be compared with the sensation of flying at the Neverland.
My destination—was Ynnan.
Kun Ming
We often hear that Yunnan province is a beautiful place where spring stop
s, green spreads. But it is not. It is chaos. The people and the cars were all
busier than Beijing as well as Shanghai. The air was dirty and suffocated. Wh
en I stood on the streets of Kun Ming, it was in the mid of a Wednesday, but y
ou could see tons of people shopping like weekends. Did they have jobs?
When night came, I chose a bar to see what did Kun Ming youth always do.
I was a little disappointed. The place I chose called Kun Du, which was a conc
entrated part of bars. The disco bar “Tian lai cun” was an ordinary disco--n
oisy music but low quality. Little people were dancing; lots of others were dr
inking. Outside, girls with heavy cosmetics were waiting for something to happ
en. At another bar, “Cool bar”, there were live shows (not rock ‘n’ roll).
The most surprising part was a singer from Northeast who imitated Michael Jac
kson accurately. It did surprise me. Nevertheless, while he was singing a song
from “Xu Wei”, I thought it might be sad for him to dance other’s dance an
d to sing other’s song at a far away place from home for a living. The audien
ce, of course, was extremely excited with this and alcohol.
When I got out, I met a student from Yunnan University at a public toilet
. He said to me with an uncontrollably shaking voice, “I had been here…seven
times,” while he was pissing. I smiled.
Got into a TAXI, I thought the both side―the singer part and the audienc
e part-were probably apathetic towards each other and towards life.
To be continued…
P.S Finally, I bought a ticket so that fixed the date back to Beijing wher
e I had live almost twenty years. When I chose to leave all the happiness and
sorrow, I knew life would be different. When I choose to return, I’ve already
different. And so does my life will be.

i am eager to grab you
