Have you listened to Antonio Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” concertos lately? Alt
hough it is one of my favorites and I play it all year around, “Autumn”, in 
concerto three, particularly fits the mood at this seasonal moment.
　　
　　In the early morning when I open the door and smell the breeze, it is a bi
t chilly after last night’s rain. As I notice the tree leaves turning into ri
ch golden-red, coincidentally I hear Vivaldi’s music played on a musical stat
ion. The quartet soon brings autumn from the outside and blends it into our mo
rning. 
　　
　　“Autumn” flows in a classic composing fashion of fast-slow-fast movement
s, The melody transports one on a bike path along with wild asters to the vall
eys colored deep. In its phrases, we see the chipmunks stocking up food for th
eir winter hibernation and flocks of geese migrating south. We remember that w
hile people are still restrained and unsettled, nature moves ahead from bursti
ng summer to tranquil fall.
　　
　　Morning goes on so fast as everyone spins around getting ready for the day
. Food needs to be warmed up, and the sweaters and jackets are coming out. A b
ottle of cider is much welcomed on the breakfast table, for it tastes best at 
this time of the year. Autumn is also the season for orchard apple-picking.
　　
　　Autumn is the season for harvests, celebrations, and getting drunk. These 
are the things that don’t seem changed through the centuries. Back in the 160
0’s in Italian villages, as Vivaldi depicted in the sonnet of his music, farm
ers were accustomed to harvest grapes and make wine. “With song and dance the
 peasant celebrates, the harvest safely gathered in his barns; Bacchus’ flowi
ng bowl intoxicates and many a reveler sinks in Morpheus’ arms…”
　　
　　As the seasons’ music is passed on through time, nature continues its ann
ual course and our lives unfold. How do you feel about the changes of the seas
ons?
