The Scroll Marked One 羊皮卷之一
　　
　　 Today I begin a new life.
　　
　　 Today I shed my old skin, which has too long suffered the bruises of fail
ure and the wounds of mediocrity.
　　
　　 Today I am born anew and my birthplace is a vineyard where there is fruit
 for all.
　　
　　 Today I will pluck grapes of wisdom from the tallest and fullest vines in
 the vineyard, for these were planted by the wisest of my profession who have 
come before me, generation upon generation.
　　
　　 Today I will savor the taste of grapes from these vines and verily I will
 swallow the seed of success buried in each and new life will sprout within me
.
　　
　　 The career I have chosen is laden with opportunity yet it is fraught with
 heartbreak and despair and the bodies of those who have failed, were they pil
ed one atop another, would cast a shadow down upon all the pyramids of the ear
th.
　　
　　 Yet I will not fail, as the others, for in my hands I now hold the charts
, which will guide through perilous waters to shores, which only yesterday see
med but a dream.
　　
　　 Failure no longer will be my payment for struggle. Just as nature made no
 provision for my body to tolerate pain neither has it made any provision for 
my life to suffer failure. Failure, like pain, is alien to my life. In the pas
t I accepted it as I accepted pain. Now I reject it and I am prepared for wisd
om and principles which will guide me out of the shadows into the sunlight of 
wealth, position, and happiness far beyond my most extravagant dreams until ev
en the golden apples in the Garden of Hesperides will seem no more than my jus
t reward.
　　
　　 Time teaches all things to him who lives forever but I have not the luxur
y of eternity. Yet within my allotted time I must practice the art of patience
 for nature acts never in haste. To create the olive, king of all trees, a hun
dred years is required. An onion plant is old in nine weeks. I have lived as a
n onion plant. It has not pleased me. Now I wouldst become the greatest of oli
ve trees and, in truth, the greatest of salesman.
　　
　　 And how will this be accomplished? For I have neither the knowledge nor t
he experience to achieve the greatness and already I have stumbled in ignoranc
e and fallen into pools of self-pity. The answer is simple. I will commence my
 journey unencumbered with either the weight of unnecessary knowledge or the h
andicap of meaningless experience. Nature already has supplied me with knowled
ge and instinct far greater than any beast in the forest and the value of expe
rience is overrated, usually by old men who nod wisely and speak stupidly.
　　
　　 In truth, experience teaches thoroughly yet her course of instruction dev
ours men’s years so the value of her lessons diminishes with the time necessa
ry to acquire her special wisdom. The end finds it wasted on dead men. Further
more, experience is comparable to fashion; an action that proved successful to
day will be unworkable and impractical tomorrow.
　　
　　 Only principles endure and these I now possess, for the laws that will le
ad me to greatness are contained in the words of these scrolls. What they will
 teach me is more to prevent failure than to gain success, for what is success
 other than a state of mind? Which two, among a thou　and wise men, will defin
e success in the same words; yet failure is always described but one way. Fail
ure is man’s inability to reach his goals in life, whatever they may be.
　　
　　In truth, the only difference between those who have failed and those who 
have succeed lies in the difference of their habits. Good habits are the key t
o all success. Bad habits are the unlocked door to failure. Thus, the first la
w I will obey, which precede all the others is --I will form good habits and b
ecome their slave.

　　 As a child I was slave to my impulses; now I am slave to my habits, as ar
e all grown men. I have surrendered my free will to the years of accumulated h
abits and the past deeds of my life have already marked out a path which threa
tens to imprison my future. My actions are ruled by appetite, passion, prejudi
ce, greed, love, fear, environment, habit, and the worst of these tyrants is h
abit. Therefore, if I must be a slave to habit let me be a slave to good habit
s. My bad habits must be destroyed and new furrows prepared for good seed.
　　
　　 I will form good habits and become their slave. 
　　
　　 And how will I accomplish this difficult feat? Through these scrolls, it 
will be done, for each scroll contains a principle which will drive a bad habi
t from my life and replace it with one which will bring me closer to success. 
For it is another of nature’s laws that only a habit can subdue another habit
. So, in order for these written words to perform their chosen task, I must di
scipline myself with the first of my new habits which is as follows:
　　
　　 I will read each scroll for thirty days in this prescribed manner, before
 I proceed to the next scroll.
　　
　　 First, I will read the words in silence when I arise. Then, I will read t
he words in silence after I have partaken of my midday meal. Last, I will read
 the words again just before I retire at day’s end, and most important, on th
is occasion I will read the words aloud.
　　
　　 On the next day I will repeat this procedure, and I will continue in like
 manner for thirty days. Then, I will turn to the next scroll and repeat this 
procedure for another thirty days. I will continue in this manner until I have
 lived with each scroll for thirty days and my reading has become habit.
　　
　　 And what will be accomplished with this habit? Herein lies the hidden sec
ret of all man’s accomplishments. As I repeat the words daily they will soon 
become a part of my active mind, but more important, they will also seep into 
my other mind, that mysterious source which never sleeps, which creates my dre
ams, and often makes me act in ways I do not comprehend.
　　
　　 As the words of these scrolls are consumed by my mysterious mind I will b
egin to awake, each morning, with a vitality I have never known before. My vig
or will increase, my enthusiasm will rise, my desire to meet the world will ov
ercome every fear I once knew at sunrise, and I will be happier than I ever be
lieved it possible to be in this world of strife and sorrow.
　　
　　 Eventually I will find myself reacting to all situations which confront m
e as I was commanded in the scrolls to react, and soon these actions and react
ions will become easy to perform, for any act with practice becomes easy.
　　
　　 Thus a new and good habit is born, for when an act becomes easy through c
onstant repetition it becomes a pleasure to perform and if it is a pleasure to
 perform it is man’s nature to perform it often. When I perform it often it b
ecomes a habit and I become its slave and since it is a good habit this is my 
will.
　　
　　Today I begin a new life.

　　 And I make a solemn oath to myself that nothing will retard my new life’
s growth. I will lose not a day from these readings for that day cannot be ret
rieved nor can I substitute another for it. I must not, I will not, break this
 habit of daily reading from these scrolls and, in truth, the few moments spen
t each day on this new habit are but a small price to pay for the happiness an
d success that will be mine.
　　
　　 As I read and re-read the words in the scrolls to follow, never will I al
low the brevity of each scroll nor the simplicity of its words to cause me to 
treat the scroll’s message lightly. Thousands of grapes are pressed to fill o
ne jar with wine, and the grape skin and pulp are tossed to the birds. So it i
s with these grapes of wisdom from the ages. Much has been filtered and tossed
 to the wind. Only the pure truth lies distilled in the words to come. I will 
drink as instructed and spill not a drop. And the seed of success I will swall
ow.
　　
　　 Today my old skin has become as dust. I will walk tall among men and they
 will know me not , for today I am a new man, with a new life.
　　 今天，我天始新的生活．
　　
　　今天，我爬出满是失败创伤的老茧．
　　
　　今天，我重新来到这个世上，我出生在葡萄园中，国内的葡萄任人享用。
　　
　　今天，我要从最高最密的藤上摘下智慧的果实，这葡萄藤是好几代前的智者种下的。

　　
　　今天，我要品尝葡萄的美味，还要吞下每一位成功的种子，让新生命在我心里萌牙。

　　
　　我选择的道路充满机遇，也有辛酸与绝望．失败的同伴数不胜数，叠在一起，比金字
塔还高。
　　
　　然而，我不会像他们一样失败，因为我手中持有航海图，可以领我越过汹涌的大海，
抵达梦中的彼岸．
　　
　　失败不再是我奋斗的代价．它和痛苦都将从我的生命中消失。失败和我，就像水火一
样，互不相容。我不再像过去一样接受它们。我要在智慧的指引下，走出失败的阴影，步
入富足、健康、快乐的乐园，这些都超出了我以往的梦想．
　　
　　我要是能长生不老，就可以学到一切，但我不能永生，所以，在有限的人生里，我必
须学会忍耐的艺术，因为大自然的行为一向是从容不迫的．造物主创造树中之王橄摊树需
要一百年的时间，而洋葱经过短短的九个星期就会枯老．我不留恋从前那种洋葱式的生活
，我要成为万树之王——橄榄树，成为现实生活中最伟大的推销员．
　　
　　怎么可能？我既没有渊博的知识，又没有丰富的经验，况且，我曾一度跌入愚昧与自
怜的深渊．答案很简单。我不会让所谓的知识或者经验妨碍我的行程．造物生已经赐予我
足够的知识和本能，这份天赋是其它生物望尘莫及的。经验的价值往往被高估了，人老的
时候开口讲的多是糊涂话．说实在的，经验确实能教给我们很多东西，只是这需要花费太
长的时间．等到人们获得智慧的时候，其价值已随着时间的消逝而减少了．结果往往是这
样，经验丰富了，人也余生无多．经验和时尚有关，适合某一时代的行为,并不寻味着在今
天仍然行得通。
　　
　　只有原则是持久的，而我现在正拥有了这些原则．这些可以指引我走向成功的原则全
写在这几张羊皮卷里．它教我如何避免失败，而不只是获得成功，因为成功更是一种精神
状态．人们对于成功的定义，见仁见智，而失败却往往只有一种解释:失败就是一个人没能
达到他的人生目标，不论这些目标是什么。
　　
　　事实上，成功与失败的最大分野，来自不同的习惯。好习惯是开启成员的钥匙，坏习
惯则是一扇向失败敞开的门。因此，我首先要做的便是养成良好的习惯，全心全意去实行
。

　　小时候．我常会感情用事，长大成人了，我要用良好的习惯代替一时的冲动。我的自
由意志屈服于多年养成的恶习，它们威胁着我的前途。我的行为受到品味、情感、偏见、
欲望、爱、恐惧、环境和习惯的影响，其中最厉害的就是习惯。因此．如果我必须受习惯
支配的话，那就让我受好习惯的支配。那些坏习惯必须戒除，我要在新的田地里播种好的
种子。
　　
　　我要养成良好的习惯，全心全意去实行。
　　
　　这不是轻而易举的事情，要怎样才能做到呢，靠这些羊皮卷就能做到。因为每～卷里
都写着一个原则，可以摒除—项坏习惯，换取一个好习惯，使人进步，走向成功。这也是
自然法则之一，只有一种习惯才能抑制另一种习惯。所以，为了走好我选择的道路，我必
须养成的第一个习惯
　　
　　每张羊皮卷用三十天的时间阅读，然后再进人下一卷。
　　
　　清晨即起，默默诵读；午饭之后，再次默读；夜晚睡前，高声朗读。
　　
　　第二天的情形完全一样。这样重复三十天后，就可以打开下一卷了。每一卷都依照同
样的方法读上三十天，久而久之，它们就成为一种习惯了。
　　
　　这些习惯有什么好处呢？这里隐含着人类成功的秘诀。当我每天重复这些话的时候，
它何成了我精神活动的一部分，更重要的是，它们渗入我的心灵。拥是个神秘的世界，永
不静止，创造梦境，在不知不觉中影响我的行为。
　　
　　当这些羊皮卷上的文字，被我奇妙的心灵完全吸收之后，我每天都会充满活力地醒来
。我从来没有这样精力充沛过。我更有活力，更有热情，要向世界挑战的欲望克服了一切
恐惧与不安。在这个充满争斗和悲伤的世界里，我竟然比以前更快活。
　　
　　最后，我会发现自己有了应付一切情况的办法。不久，这些办法就能运用自如．因为
，任何方法，只要多练习，就会变得简单易行。
　　
　　经过多次重复，一种看似复杂的行为就变得轻而易举，实行起来，就会有无限的乐趣
，有了乐趣，出于人之天性，我就更乐意常去实行。于是，一种好的习惯便诞生了．习惯
成为自然。既是一种好的习惯，也就是我的意原。
　　
　　今天，我天始新的生活．

　　我郑重地发誓，绝不让任何事情妨碍我新生命的成长。在阅读这些羊卷的时候，我绝
不浪费一天的时间，因为时光一去不返，失去的日子是无法弥补的。我也绝不打破每天阅
读的习惯。事实上，每天在这些新习惯上花费少许时间，相对于可能获得的愉乐与成功而
言，只是微不足道的代价。
　　
　　当我阅读羊皮卷中的字句时，绝不能出为文字的精炼而忽视内容的深沉。一瓶葡萄美
酒需要千百颗果子酿制而成，果皮和渣子抛给小鸟。葡萄的智慧代代相传，有些被过滤，
有些被淘汰，随风飘逝。只有纯正的真理才是永恒的。它们就精炼在我要阅读的文字中。
我要依照指示，绝不浪费，饮下成功的种子。
　　
　　今天，我的老茧化为尘埃。我在人群中昂首阔步，不会有人认出我来，因为我不再是
过去的自己、我已拥有新的生命。

　　I will greet this day with love in my heart.
　　
　　 For this is the greatest secret of success in all ventures. Muscle can sp
lit a shield and even destroy life but only the unseen power of love can open 
the hearts of men and until I master this art I will remain no more than a ped
dler in the market place. I will make love my greatest weapon and none on whom
 I call can defend against its force.
　　
　　My reasoning they may counter; my speech they may distrust; my apparel the
y may disapprove; my face they may reject; and even my bargains may cause them
 suspicion; yet my love will melt all hearts liken to the sun whose rays softe
n the coldest clay.

　　 I will greet this day with love in my heart.
　　
　　 And how will I do this? Henceforth will I look on all things with love an
d I will be born again. I will love the sun for it warms my bones; yet I will 
love the rain for it cleanses my spirit. I will love the light for it shows me
 the way; yet I will love the darkness for it shows me the stars. I will welco
me happiness for it enlarges my heart; yet I will endure sadness for it opens 
my soul. I will acknowledge rewards for they are my due; yet I will welcome ob
stacles for they are my challenge.
　　
　　 I will greet this day with love in my heart.
　　
　　 And how will I speak? I will laud mine enemies and they will become frien
ds; I will encourage my friends and they will become brothers. Always will I d
ig for reasons to applaud; never will I scratch for excuses to gossip. When I 
am tempted to criticize I will bite on my tongue; when I am moved to praise I 
will shout from the roofs.
　　
　　 Is it not so that birds, the wind, the sea and all nature speaks with the
 music of praise for their creator? Cannot I speak with the same music to his 
children? Henceforth will I remember this secret and it will change my life.

　　
　　I will greet this day with love in my heart.

　　 And how will I act? I will love all manners of men for each has qualities
 to be admired even though they be hidden. With love I will tear down the wall
 fo suspicion and hate which they have built round their hearts and in its pla
ce will I build bridges so that my love may enter their souls.
　　
　　 I will love the ambitious for they can inspire me! I will love the failur
es for they can teach me. I will love the kings for they are but human; I will
 love the meek for they are divine. I will love the rich for they are yet lone
ly; I will love the poor for they are so many. I will love the young for the f
aith they hold; I will love the beautiful for their eyes of sadness; I will lo
ve the ugly for their souls of peace.
　　
　　 I will greet this day with love in my heart.
　　
　　 But how will I react to the actions of others? With love. For just as lov
e is my weapon to open the hearts of men, love is also my shield to repulse th
e arrows of hate and the spears of anger. Adversity and discouragement will be
at against my new shield and become as the softest of rains. My shield will pr
otect me in the market place and sustain me when I am alone. It will uplift me
 in moments of despair yet it will calm me in time of exultation. It will beco
me stronger and more protective with use until one day I will cast it aside an
d walk unencumbered among all manners of men and, when I do, my name will be r
aised high on the pyramid of life.
　　
　　 I will greet this day with love in my heart.
　　
　　 And how will I confront each whom I meet? In only one way. In silence and
 to myself I will address him and say I Love You. Though spoken in silence the
se words will shine in my eyes, unwrinkle my brow, bring a smile to my lips, a
nd echo in my voice; and hisheart will be opened. And who is there who will sa
y nay to my goods when his heart feels my love?
　　
　　 I will greet this day with love in my heart.
　　
　　 And most of all I will love myself. For when I do I will zealously inspec
t all things which enter my body, my mind, my soul, and my heart. Never will I
 overindulge the requests of my flesh, rather I will cherish my body with clea
nliness and moderation. Never will I allow my mind to be attracted to evil and
 despair, rather I will uplift it with the knowledge and wisdom of the ages. N
ever will I allow my soul to become complacent and satisfied, rather I will fe
ed it with meditation and prayer. Never will I allow my heart to become small 
and bitter, rather I will share it and it will grow and warm the earth.
　　
　　 I will greet this day with love in my heart.
　　
　　 Henceforth will I love all mankind. From this moment all hate is let from
 my veins for I have no time to hate, only time to love. From this moment I ta
ke the first step required to become a man among men. With love I will increas
e my sales a hundredfold and become a great salesman. If I have no other quali
ties I can succeed with love alone. Without it I will fail though I possess al
l the knowledge and skills of the world.
　　
　　 I will greet this day with love, and I will succeed.
　　 我要用全身心的爱来迎接今天。
　　
　　因为，这是一切成功的最大秘密。强力能够劈开一块盾牌，甚至毁灭生命，但是只有
爱才具有无与伦比的力量，使人们敞开心扉。在掌握了爱的艺术之前，我只算商场上的无
名小卒。我要让爱成为我最大的武器，没有人能抵挡它的威力。
　　
　　我的理论，他们也许反对；我的言谈，他们也许怀疑；我的穿着，他们也许不赞成；
我的长相，他们也许不喜欢；甚至我廉价出售的商品都可能使他们将信将疑，然而我的爱
心一定能温暖他们，就像太阳的光芒能溶化冰冷的冻土。

　　我该怎样说呢？我赞美敌人。敌人于是成为朋友；我鼓励朋友，朋友于是成为手足。
我要常想理由赞美别人，绝不搬弄是非，道人长短。想要批评人时，咬住舌头，想要赞美
人时，高声表达。飞鸟，清风，海浪，自然界的万物不都在用美妙动听的歌声赞美造物主
吗？我也要用同样的歌声赞美她的儿女。从今往后，我要记住这个秘密。它将改变我的生

　　我该怎样行动呢？我要爱每个人的言谈举止，因为人人都有值得钦佩的性格，虽然有
时不易察觉。我要用爱摧毁困住人们心灵的高墙，那充满怀疑与仇恨的用墙。我要铺一座
通向人们心灵的桥梁。
　　
　　我爱雄心勃勃的人，他们给我灵感。我爱失败的人，他们给我教训。我爱王侯将相，
因为他们也是凡人。我爱谦恭之人，因为他们非凡。我爱富人，因为他们孤独。我爱穷人
。因为穷人太多了．我爱少年，因为他们真诚。我爱长者，因为他们有智慧。我爱美丽的
人，因为他们眼中流露着凄迷。我爱丑陋的人，因为他们有颗宁静的心。

　　我该怎样回应他人的行为呢？用爱心。爱是我打开人们心扉的钥匙，也是我抵挡仇恨
之箭与愤怒之矛的盾牌。爱使挫折变得如春雨般温和，它是我商场上的护身符：孤独时。
给我支持；绝望时，使我振作；狂喜时，让我平静。这种爱心会一天天加强．越发又有保
护力，直到有一天,我可以自然地面对芸芸众生，处之泰然。
　　
　　我要用上身心的爱来迎接今天。
　　
　　我该怎样面对遇到的每一个人呢？只有一种办法，我要在心里默默地为他祝福。这无
言的爱会闪现在我的眼神里，流露在我的眉宇间，让我嘴角挂上微笑，在我的声音里响起
共鸣。在这无奈的爱意里，他的心扉问我敞开入他不再拒绝我推销的货物。
　　
　　我要用全身心的爱来迎接今天。
　　
　　最主要的，我要爱自己。只有这样，我才会认真检查进入我的身体，思想，精神，头
脑，灵魂，心怀的一切东西.我绝不放纵肉体的需求，我要用清洁与节制来珍惜我的身体。
我绝不让头脑受到邪恶与绝望的引诱，我要用智慧和知识使之升华。我绝不让灵魂陷入自
满的状态，我要用沉思和祈祷来滋润它。我绝不让心怀狭窄，我要与人分享，使它成长，
温暖整个世界。
　　
　　我要用全身心的爱来迎接今天。
　　
　　从今往后，我要爱所有的人。仇恨将从我的血管中流走。我没有时间去恨，只有时间
去爱。现在，我迈出成为一个优秀的人的第一步。有了爱，我将成为伟大的推销员，即使
才疏智短，也能以爱心获得成功；相反地，如果没有爱，即使博学多识，也终将失败。

　　I will persist until I succeed.
　　
　　 In the Orient young bulls are tested for the fight arena in a certain man
ner. Each is brought to the ring and allowed to attack a picador who pricks th
em with a lance. The bravery of each bull is then rated with care according to
 the number of times he demonstrates his willingness to charge in spite of the
 sting of the blade. Henceforth will I recognize that each day I am tested by 
life in like manner. If I persist, if I continue to try, if I continue to char
ge forward, I will succeed.
　　
　　 I will persist until I succeed.
　　
　　 I was not delivered unto this world in defeat, nor does failure course in
 my veins. I am not a sheep waiting to be prodded by my shepherd. I am a lion 
and I refuse to talk, to walk, to sleep with the sheep. I will hear not those 
who weep and complain, for their disease is contagious. Let them join the shee
p. The slaughterhouse of failure is not my destiny.
　　
　　I will persist until I succeed.

　　 The prizes of life are at the end of each journey, not near the beginning
; and it is not given to me to know how many steps are necessary in order to r
each my goal. Failure I may still encounter at the thousandth step, yet succes
s hides behind the next bend in the road. Never will I know how close it lies 
unless I turn the corner.
　　
　　 Always will I take another step. If that is of no avail I will take anoth
er, and yet another. In truth, one step at a time is not too difficult.
　　
　　 I will persist until I succeed.
　　
　　 Henceforth, I will consider each day‘s effort as but one blow of my blad
e against a mighty oak. The first blow may cause not a tremor in the wood, nor
 the second, nor the third. Each blow, of itself, may be trifling, and seem of
 no consequence. Yet from childish swipes the oak will eventually tumble. So i
t will be with my efforts of today.
　　
　　 I will be liken to the raindrop which washes away the mountain; the ant w
ho devours a tiger; the star which brightens the earth; the slave who builds a
 pyramid. I will build my castle one brick at a time for I know that small att
empts, repeated, will complete any undertaking.
　　
　　 I will persist until I succeed.
　　
　　 I will never consider defeat and I will remove from my vocabulary such wo
rds and phrases as quit, cannot, unable, impossible, out of the question, impr
obable, failure, unworkable, hopeless, and retreat; for they are the words of 
fools. I will avoid despair but if this disease of the mind should infect me t
hen I will work on in despair. I will toil and I will endure. I will ignore th
e obstacles at my feet and keep mine eyes on the goals above my head, for I kn
ow that where dry desert ends, green grass grows.
　　
　　 I will persist until I succeed.
　　
　　 I will remember the ancient law of averages and I will bend it to my good
. I will persist with knowledge that each failure to sell will increase my cha
nce for success at the next attempt. Each nay I hear will bring me closer to t
he sound of yea. Each frown I meet only prepares me for the smile to come. Eac
h misfortune I encounter will carry in it the seed of tomorrow‘s good luck. I
 must have the night to appreciate the day. I must fail often to succeed only 
once.
　　
　　 I will persist until I succeed.
　　
　　 I will try, and try, and try again. Each obstacle I will consider as a me
re detour to my goal and a challenge to my profession. I will persist and deve
lop my skills as the mariner develops his, by learning to ride out the wrath o
f each storm.

one that live today, and none that come tomorrow can walk and talk and move an
d think exactly like me. All men are my brothers yet I am different from each.
 I am a unique creature. 
　　
　　I am nature‘s greatest miracle. 
　　
　　Although I am of the animal kingdom, animal rewards alone will not satisfy
 me. Within me burns a flame, which has been passed from generations uncounted
 and its heat is a constant irritation to my spirit to become better than I am
, and I will. I will fan this flame of dissatisfaction and proclaim my uniquen
ess to the world. 
　　
　　None can duplicate my brush strokes, none can make my chisel marks, none c
an duplicate my handwriting, none can produce my child, and, in truth, none ha
s the ability to sell exactly as I. Henceforth, I will capitalize on this diff

　　I will live this day as if it is my last.
　　
　　And what shall I do with this last precious day which remains in my keepin
g? First, I will seal up its container of life so that not one drop spills its
elf upon the sand. I will waste not a moment mourning yesterday’s misfortunes
, yesterday’s defeats, yesterday‘s aches of the heart, for why should I thro
w good after bad?
　　
　　Can sand flow upward in the hour glass? Will the sun rise where it sets an
d set where it rises? Can I relive the errors of yesterday and right them? Can
 I call back yesterday‘s wounds and make them whole? Can I become younger tha
n yesterday? Can I take back the evil that was spoken, the blows that were str
uck, the pain that was caused? No. Yesterday is buried forever and I will thin
k of it no more.
　　
　　I will live this day as if it is my last.
　　
　　And what then shall I do? Forgetting yesterday neither will I think of tom
orrow. Why should I throw note after maybe? Can tomorrow‘s sand flow through 
the glass before today‘s? Will the sun rise twice this morning? Can I perform
 tomorrow‘s deeds while standing in today‘s path? Can I place tomorrow‘s go
ld in today‘s purse? Can tomorrow’s child be born today? Can tomorrow‘s dea
th cast its shadow backward and darken today‘s joy? Should I concern myself o
ver events which l may never witness? Should I torment myself with problems th
at may never come to pass? No! Tomorrow lies buried with yesterday, and I will
 think of it no more.
　　
　　I will live this day as if it is my last.
　　
　　This day is all I have and these hours are now my eternity. I greet this s
unrise with cries of joy as a prisoner who is reprieved from death. I lift min
e arms with thanks for this priceless gift of a new day. So too, I will beat u
pon my heart with gratitude as I consider all who greeted yesterday‘s sunrise
 who are no longer with the living today. I am indeed a fortunate man and toda
y‘s hours are but a bonus, undeserved. Why have I been allowed to live this e
xtra day when others, far better than I, have departed? Is it that they have a
ccomplished their purpose while mine is yet to be achieved? Is this another op
portunity for me to become the man I know I can be? Is there a purpose in natu
re? Is this my day to excel?
　　
　　I will live this day as if it is my last. I have but one life and life is 
naught but a measurement of time. When I waste one I destroy the other. If I w
aste today I destroy the last page of my life. Therefore, each hour of this da
y will I cherish for it can never return. It cannot be banked today to be with
drawn on the morrow, for who can trap the wind? Each minute of this day will I
 grasp with both hands and fondle with love for its value is beyond price. Wha
t dying man can purchase another breath though he willingly give all his gold?
 What price dare I place on the hours ahead? I will make them priceless!
　　
　　I will live this day as if it is my last. I will avoid with fury the kille
rs of time. Procrastination I will destroy with action; doubt I will bury unde
r faith; fear I will dismember with confidence. Where there are idle mouths I 
will listen not; where there are idle hands I will linger not; where there are
 idle bodies I will visit not. Henceforth I know that to court idleness is to 
steal food, clothing, and warmth from those I love. I am not a thief. I am a m
an of love and today is my last chance to prove my love and my greatness.
　　
　　I will live this day as if it is my last.
　　
　　The duties of today I shall fu1fill today. Today I shall fondle my childre
n while they are young; tomorrow they will be gone, and so will I. Today I sha
ll embrace my woman with sweet kisses; tomorrow she will be gone, and so will 
I. Today I shall lift up a friend in need; tomorrow he will no longer cry for 
help, nor will I hear his cries. Today I shall give myself in sacrifice and wo
rk; tomorrow I will have nothing to give, and there will be none to receive.

　　And if it is my last, it will be my greatest monument. This day I will mak
e the best day of my life. This day I will drink every minute to its full. I w
ill savor its taste and give thanks. I will make the every hour count and each
 minute I will trade only for something of value. I will labor harder than eve

　　Today I will be master of my emotions.
　　
　　The tides advance; the tides recede. Winter goes and summer comes. summer 
wanes and the cold increases. The sun rises; the sun sets. The moon is full; t
he moon is black. The birds arrive; the birds depart. Flowers bloom; flowers f
ade. Seeds are sown; harvests are reaped. all nature is a circle of moods and 
I am a part of nature and so, like the tides, my moods will rise; my moods wil
l fall.
　　
　　Today I will be master of my emotions.
　　
　　It is one of nature‘s tricks, little understood, that each day I awaken w
ith moods that have changed from yesterday. Yesterday‘s joy wilI become today
‘s sadness; yet today‘s sadness will grow into tomorrow‘s joy. Inside me is
 a wheel, constantly turning from sadness to joy, from exultation to depressio
n, from happiness to melancholy. Like the flowers, today‘s full bloom of joy 
will fade and wither into despondency, yet I will remember that as today‘s de
ad flower carries the seed of tomorrow‘s bloom so, too, does today‘s sadness
 carry the seed of tomorrow‘s joy.
　　
　　Today I will be master of my emotions.
　　
　　And how will I master these emotions so that each day will be productive? 
For unless my mood is right the day will be a failure. Trees and plants depend
 on the weather to flourish but I make my own weather, yea I transport it with
 me. If I bring rain and gloom and darkness and pessimism to my customers then
 they will react with rain and gloom and darkness and pessimism and they will 
purchase naught. If I bring joy and enthusiasm and brightness and laughter to 
my customers they will react with joy and enthusiasm and brightness and laught
er and my weather will produce a harvest of sales and a granary of gold for me
.
　　
　　Today I will be master of my emotions.
　　
　　And how will I master my emotions so that every day is a happy day, and a 
productive one? I will learn this secret of the ages: Weak is he who permits h
is thoughts to control his actions; strong is he who forces his actions to con
trol his thoughts. Each day, when I awaken, I will follow this plan of battle 
before I am captured by the forces of sadness, self-pity and failure-
　　
　　If I feel depressed I will sing.
　　
　　If I feel sad I will laugh.
　　
　　If I feel ill I will double my labor.
　　
　　If I feel fear I will plunge ahead.
　　
　　If I feel inferior I will wear new garments.
　　
　　If I feel uncertain I will raise my voice.
　　
　　If I feel poverty I will think of wealth to come.
　　
　　If I feel incompetent I will remember past success.
　　
　　If I feel insignificant I will remember my goals.
　　
　　Today I will be master of my emotions. 
　　
　　Henceforth, I will know that only those with inferior ability can always b
e at their best, and I am not inferior. There will be days When I must IN THE 
WORLD constantly struggle against forces which would tear me down. Those such 
as despair and sadness are simple to recognize but there are others which appr
oach with a smile and the hand of friendship and they can also destroy me. Aga
inst them, too, I must never relinquish control-
　　
　　If I become overconfident I will recall my failures.
　　
　　If I overindulge I will think of past hungers.
　　
　　If I feel complacency I will remember my competition.
　　
　　If I enjoy moments of greatness I will remember moments of shame.
　　
　　If I feel all-powerful I will try to stop the wind.
　　
　　If I attain great wealth I will remember one unfed mouth.
　　
　　If l become overly proud I will remember a moment of weakness.
　　
　　If I feel my skill is unmatched I will look at the stars.
　　
　　Today I will be master of my emotions.
　　
　　And with this new knowledge I will also understand and recognize the moods
 of him on whom I call. I will make allowances for his anger and irritation of
 today for he knows not the secret of controlling his mind. I can withstand hi
s arrows and insults for now I know that tomorrow he will change and be a joy 
to approach.
　　
　　No longer will I judge a man on one meeting; no longer will I fail to call
 again tomorrow on he who meets me with hate today. This day he will not buy g
old chariots for a penny, yet tomorrow he would exchange his home for a tree. 
My knowledge of this secret will be my key to great wealth.

　　潮起潮落，冬去春来，夏末秋至，日出日落，月圆月缺，雁来雁往，花飞花谢，草长
瓜熟，自然界万物都在循环往复的变化中，我也不例外，情绪会时好时坏。
　　
　　今天我学会控制情绪。
　　
　　这是大自然的玩笑，很少有人窥破天机。每天我醒来时，不再有旧日的心情。昨日的
快乐变成今天的哀愁，今天的悲伤又转为明日的喜悦。我心中像一只轮子不停地转着，由
乐而悲，由悲而喜，由喜而忧。这就好比花儿的变化，今天枯败的花儿蕴藏着明天新生的
种子，今天的悲伤也预示着明天的快乐。
　　
　　今天我学会控制情绪。
　　
　　我怎样才能控制情绪，以使每天卓有成效呢？除非我心平气和，否则迎来的又将是失
败的一天。花草树木，随着气候的变化而生长，但是我为自己创造天气。我要学会用自己
的心灵弥补气候的不足。如果我为顾客带来风雨、忧郁、黑暗和悲观，那么他们也会报之
于风雨、忧郁、黑暗和悲观，而他们什么也不会买。相反的，如果我们为顾客献上欢乐、
喜悦、光明和笑声，他们也会报之以欢乐、喜悦、光明和笑声，我就能获得销售上的丰收
，赚取成仓的金币。

　　我怎样才能控制情绪，让每天充满幸福和欢乐？我要学会这个千古秘诀：弱者任思绪
控制行为，强者让行控制思绪。每天醒来当我被悲伤、自怜、失败的情绪包围时，我就这

　　沮丧时，我引吭高歌。
　　
　　悲伤时，我开怀大笑。
　　
　　病痛时，我加倍工作。

们往往面带微笑，却随时可能将我们摧垮。对它们，我们永远不能放松警惕。

　　I will laugh at the world. 
　　
　　No living creature can laugh except man. Trees may bleed when they are wou
nded, and beasts in the field will cry in pain and hunger, yet only I have the
 gift of laughter and it is mine to use whenever I choose. Henceforth I will c
ultivate the habit of laughter. 
　　
　　I will smile and my digestion will improve; I will chuckle and my burdens 
will be lightened; I will laugh and my life will be lengthened for this is the
 great secret of long life and now it is mine. 
　　
　　I will laugh at the world. 
　　
　　And most of all, I will laugh at myself for man is most comical when he ta
kes himself too seriously. Never will I fall into this trap of the mind. For t
hough I be nature‘s greatest miracle am I not still a mere grain tossed about
 by the winds of time? Do I truly know whence I came or whither I am bound? Wi
ll my concern for this day not seem foolish ten years hence? Why should I perm
it the petty happenings of today to disturb me? What can take place before thi
s sun sets which will not seem insignificant in the river of centuries? 
　　
　　I will laugh at the world. 
　　
　　And how can I laugh when confronted with man or deed which offends me so a
s to bring forth my tears or my curses? Four words I will train myself to say 
until they become a habit so strong that immediately they will appear in my mi
nd whenever good humor threatens to depart from me. These words, passed down f
rom the ancients, will carry me through every adversity and maintain my life i
n balance. These four words are: This too shall pass. 
　　
　　I will laugh at the world. 
　　
　　For all worldly things shall indeed pass. When I am heavy with heartache I
 shall console myself that this too shall pass; when I am puffed with success 
I shall warn myself that this too shall pass. When I am strangled in poverty I
 shall tell myself that this too shall pass; when I am burdened with wealth I 
shall tell myself that this too shall pass. Yea, verily, where is he who built
 the pyramid? Is he not buried within its stone? And will the pyramid, one day
, not also be buried under sand? If all things shall pass why should I be of c

　　I will paint this day with laughter; I will frame this night in song. Neve
r will I labor to be happy; rather will I remain too busy to be sad. I will en
joy today‘s happiness today. It is not grain to be stored in a box. It is not
 wine to be saved in a jar. It cannot be saved for the morrow. It must be sown
 and reaped on the same day and this I will do, henceforth.

　　And with my laughter all things will be reduced to their proper size. I wi
ll laugh at my failures and they will vanish in clouds of new dreams; I will l

　　Henceforth will l shed only tears of sweat, for those of sadness or remors
e or frustration are of no value in the market place whilst each smile can be 
exchanged for gold and each kind word, spoken from my heart, can build a castl

　　Never will l allow myself to become so important, so wise, so dignified, s
o powerful, that I forget how to laugh at myself and my world. In this matter 
I will always remain as a child, for only as a cl1ild am I given the ability t
o look up to others; and so long as I 1ook up to another I will never grow too
 long for my cot.

　　And so long as I can laugh never will I be poor. This, then, is one of nat
ure‘s greatest gifts, and l will waste it no more. Only with laughter and hap

r happiness is the wine that sharpens the taste of the meal. To enjoy success
