How can I learn to speak Standard English at English Corner?
I think you are somewhat biased in asking such a question. You must have tho
ught that speaking with Chinese people, you can only learn Chinese English--
-not standard English at all. In fact, according to my experiences, there ar
e many excellent English speakers in English Corner and they are Chinese. Th
ey can serve as a good model of English for you just nearly as well as a nat
ive speaker can do.
First, Chinese speakers can speak English in a way that makes you learn a lo
t about English. As they are also English learners, when you begin to talk, 
they will know your vocabulary size and your English level fairly quickly. T
hen they can speak the language at a certain level of difficulty to suit you
--- you can understand them very well and learn many useful phrases in your 
conversation. But for a native speaker of English, he is less likely to be a
ble to do so, unless he has received a good training in Teaching English as 
a Second Language (TESL).
Second, Chinese speakers can share their English learning experience with yo
u, for which native English can offer very little. Don't assume that an Amer
ican who speaks English in west-coast accent can tell you how to acquire thi
s ability. You should remember he learned to speak English in a mostly uncon
scious way when he grew up, just like how we learn to speak our mother tongu
e---the local Chinese dialect in our hometown. But an excellent Chinese spea
ker of English who has gone through the complicated foreign language leaning
 process will tell you exactly how you can learn English most efficiently.
Third, it is important to know that you come to English Corner because it of
fers you an opportunity to speak English. For you, it is really hard to loca
te another occasion that allows you to talk so extensively in English as in 
English Corner, isn't it? Therefore, don't let your precious speaking opport
unities fly away; try to speak more. You will never fail to find that most C
hinese people you talk to are very patient, cooperative and instructive.
There are a great deal more good reasons you can find talking with Chinese s
peakers, so please don't feel discouraged when you see Chinese everywhere at
 English Corner. Dispose of your misconception, or it will slow down or even
 block your progress in oral English.
