Why couldn't I find good topics for English Corner?
It's a common phenomenon that as soon as we exchange greetings with people a
t English Corner. Our brain turns blank---we find we have nothing interestin
g to say. I've heard people complaining repeatedly, "My life is so boring th
at I would have nothing to speak even if you asked me to talk in Chinese."
It's true that we work and study in a nearly inflexible daily routine. Howev
er, if we observe our life carefully, you will still be able to note some va
riations day by day, and conclude that there is not a single day that resemb
les either a day before or a day after. So I am not surprised to hear a stud
ent describing how he felt when he was cheating in an examination, how his c
lassmates helped a female student in illness, how he felt when hearing of th
e shocking news that Chinese embassy in Belgrade was bombed by NATO, and so 
on. Therefore my first suggestion is to be observant with your life.
My second suggestion is to think actively. I notice that Chinese students pr
efer quoting ideas he has read or heard to putting forward original thoughts
 of his own. It has much to do with the traditional respect for authority in
 China, which is beyond our present discussion. In order to be an active thi
nker, you just need simply to look at things dialectally, or from several di
fferent perspectives. For example, it's a popular view that due to numerous 
reasons examination-oriented teaching should be changed in China. But can yo
u list ten reasons to show that it should not be changed? Yes, it's hard. Bu
t you CAN. So try to express your original thoughts at English Corner; they 
will make your speech more enjoyable and stimulating to your audiences.
In short, keen observation with your life, a constant racking of your brain,
 and thorough preparation beforehand will help you to break the ice all the 
time at English Corner.
