How can I find a good partner in English Corner?
As you arrive at English Corner, the first question usually occurs to you ma
y be "where is my partner today?" Then you begin searching for him among big
crowds of people. If you are a new comer, sometimes it can be rather energy
-sapping: you walk around again and again and still feel hard to determine w
hom to talk to. The following suggestions are summarized based on the experi
ence of many English Corner goers.
First, your partners should preferably speak English as well as or better th
an you do. As you walk around, you can stop at each crowd and listen to the
speakers in that group for a while. If you feel their spoken English level i
s somewhat higher or the same as yours, and if you are interested in their t
opics, you can join them. However, if you talk to a person who speaks much b
etter than you, soon you will find yourself in a disadvantaged circumstance-
--you may not understand him most of the time; you may become nervous as som
etimes you are not sure how to respond; and you may speak less and less as y
our confidence is being eroded.
Second, you can talk to some regular mates. If you have been to English Corn
er for a couple of times, you must have talked to a number of people. You ca
n select a few speakers among them that you feel particularly comfortable wi
th and then try to talk to them often. As you talk more and more together, y
ou will become familiar with each other's background---English level, intere
sts, specialization, personality and temperament, and so on. Later on, talki
ng with them will lead to a sense of relaxation and security in you, which i
s an ideal psychological condition for you to talk at English Corner.
Third, you can go to English Corner with your friends or classmates. In case
you failed to locate a conversation partner, you can always talk to your fr
iends or classmates. Actually, you can even prepare for English Corner toget
her with them by choosing topics, preparing some phrases and structures and
rehearsing some dialogues together. So it is always a good idea to often soc
ialize with a group of friends or classmates who are also keen English Corne
r goers.
