How can I ask questions?
As we know, asking people questions can encourage them to talk more. But how
 can we raise questions? What are the situations in which we can raise quest
ions?
1. Ask people to clarify problems. You can ask your partner to explain the p
oints that you have not quite understood or have not been fully illustrated 
with specific facts or details. For example: "I don't quite understand what 
you really mean by saying, 'all these phenomena have been interrelated.' Can
 you explain it again?"
2. Ask people questions to show your special interest. You can ask questions
 in order to learn more details about a particular aspect, or to further you
r understanding of an issue. Questions in this situation differs from that i
n the previous situation in that the purpose of first situation questions is
 mainly to clarify unclear points, whereas the second situation question is 
not lack of clarity, but because of special interest of the questioner.
3. Ask people questions to raise different opinions. When dealing with an is
sue, we can look at it from different standings, and thereafter result in di
fferent conclusions, opinions or viewpoints. Thus, it is quite natural to el
icit different opinions by posing questions. For example: "Perhaps we're loo
king at the problem from different viewpoints. To the best of my knowledge, 
what you are saying seems to be theoretically unclear in Could you give us a
 further explanation on that aspect?" These questions are normally raised in
 a polite and non-threatening way so as to avoid obstacles or unpleasant fee
lings.
4. Ask people questions for other functional purposes. For example, in order
 to extend your personal care to other people, you can ask, "How is your pre
sent work progressing?" or wanting to switch the topic, you can ask, "By the
 way, what do you think of the news that students will have to pay tuition f
or their graduate education beginning next year?"
