How can I understand other people better in a conversational situation?
It often makes us embarrassed or nervous when we fail to understand other pe
ople, because we would be uncertain how to respond properly when it comes ou
r turn to speak. The following measures are what you can do to alleviate thi
s problem.
1. Listen to other people attentively. You should try to understand every se
ntence the other speaks. Of course you can't expect to understand every word
he uses and it's also not necessary. Actually, the speaker may use a word s
everal times in his speech, and you can figure out what the word means in th
e context it is used.
2. Don't hesitate to ask the speaker if you really don't understand what he
says. Although it may be a little rude to interrupt somebody, but it's defin
itely necessary in many occasions. Also, a speaker generally wants his audie
nce to understand him, so it's usually acceptable to stop someone after he f
inishes a certain point.
3. Observe some non-verbal devices a speaker uses. As you may have noticed i
n your daily life, people don't communicate exclusively with their words; th
ey at the same time resort to their facial expressions, gestures, body movem
ents, dressing and the distance they keep from you. Some psychologists belie
ve that we communicate 65% of our ideas and feelings WITHOUT words! Thus a g
ood understanding of these non-verbal devices will surely aid you to underst
and more of what other people are trying to communicate.
