Idioms have wide use in Engish, esp. in everyday speaking
English. Have a good understanding of them will help you
speak English better. What's more in the listening comprehension
part of TOEFL, if your understanding of idioms is merely
vague, not quick and clear enough, you will feel gret pityful
at some actually very easy questions.
Below I'd like to introduce you some of American Idioms in
a series of articles, which is a little above middle degree.
Here is the 'A'.
a/one hell of = extraordinary, very
according to Hoyle = by the rules; regularly
afraid of one's shadow = scared of small of imaginary things 疑神怕鬼
act up = behave badly 失礼
after one's own heart 与之有共同爱好
against the grain = so as to cause anger on dislike 使发怒
against time/the clock = as fast as possible 尽快地;
so as to cause delay by using up time 拖延时间
air/wask one's dirty linen in public :
talk about one's private quarrrels or disgraces where others can hear;
make public st.embarrassing that should be kept secret
当众揭丑
all set = ready; completed
all wet = extirely wrong
apple of one's eye = a cherished person or object 宠儿, 宠物
around the clock = all day and all night
at death's door = very near death, dying
at on'e heels = close behind
