Summary: Living Hand to Mouth

At Columbia University, a professor of psychology named Krauss is engaged in
 research on the role of gestures in speech. The traditional scientific theo
ry held that gestures are a visual language that conveys meaning, a hand bru
shed sideways means "over there", for example. But there are still some mean
ingless gestures, such gestures may help people recall words, suggested by K
rauss, .

Krauss's viewpoint is put emphasis on by Many recent researches. One study s
hows that people gesture more when defining words with an obviously spatial 
component-such as "under" and "adjacent"-than when defining abstract words l
ike "thought" or "evil". Patients whose ability to name objects is weakened 
for brain damage seem to use as many gestures as possible to find a word. In
 an experiment, measurement by attaching electrodes to people's arms indicat
es that there is more muscle activation when people try to access a word con
taining a meaning of movement than an abstract word. In another experiment, 
the subjects whose hands were kept still hardly thought of the word fitting 
some definitions. Actually they would make motions embodied in the word befo
re coming up with it. Such findings prove how our word memory works. That is
, gestures help us remember and recall a word more easily, if the word is wi
th a spatial or movement connotation .

Researchers also note that some people gesture more than others, the fact ma
y reflect the rhythmicity of language and the way to think. The more rhythmi
c, the more gestures. And people who gesture a lot may be accustomed to conc
eptualizing things in spatial, physical terms. So gestures are helpful when 
an abstract word has physical meaning.
