网友Jane：我碰到一个短语：gild the lily，请问是不是“锦上添花”的意思？另外，有
人告诉我这个短语是从莎士比亚的作品中来的，真的是这样吗？

Dr.eye：to gild the lily是一个动词短语，但并不是“锦上添花”的意思。相反，它表
示“画蛇添足”，也就是在已经很美好的事物上增添不必要的修饰，反而累赘。这个短语
的确是从莎士比亚的作品King John中来：To gild refined gold, to paint the lily / 
To throw a perfume on the violet.... / Is wasteful and ridiculous excess。可见
，原文应该是to gild gold和to paint the lily才对。但有人读得快了，就记成了to 
gild the lily。鉴于to gild the lily的说法与短语所要表达的意思并无矛盾，它也就被
人们广泛接收，成了一个固定短语。
