Earthquake
秘鲁上周六晚发生了里氏八级地震，造成至少50多人死亡，数百人受伤。那么让我们一
起来了解一些地震中常用的中英文词汇。地震，earthquake或quake; 里氏八级，8 on 
the Richter scale; 震中，epicenter; 震感，seismaesthesia, feel of the earthq
uake(tremor); 震源，focus (of an earthquake), seismic origin; 死亡人数，deat
h toll; 幸存者，survivors; 受灾者，victims; 救援人员，rescue workers; 重灾区
，the harder-hit area; 坠落的残骸、碎片，falling debris。
Egg somebody on
"Egged on by Crowd, Woman Leaps From Seattle Bridge" 当你看到这条新闻标题的时
候，不知是否和我一样迷惑。Egg不是"鸡蛋"吗， 它的分词形式会是什么意思呢？请教
专家后才明白egg作动词是有一个固定用法的短语 "egg somebody on"，意思是"鼓动、
怂恿（尤指做坏事"。那么这则标题的意思是"一位受人群煽动的女人从西雅图的一座桥
上跳了下去"。又例如 "He wouldn't have thrown that stone if the other boys ha
dn't egged him on. " (要不是那些男孩子们怂恿他，他不会仍那块石头的。)
