Landslide victory
伊朗总统哈塔米(Khatami)以高达77%的得票率赢得于8日举行的全国大选，从而获得连任
。以这么高的得票率获胜，我们说哈塔米取得了landslide victory，即以绝对优势取得
胜利。Landslide原意是山崩、滑坡的意思，然而用在政治场合，尤其是竞选中，lands
lide就是"一方选票占压倒性多数，一面倒的胜利"的意思。我们可以用 "to win in a 
landslide"， "have a landslide victory" "to win the election by landslide"这
几种表达方式来表示"以绝对优势取得胜利"的意思。请看这样的例句： Iran's reform
ist President Mohammad Khatami swept to a landslide victory Saturday. (伊朗改
革派人物穆罕默德-哈塔米总统在周六的选举中以压倒多数选票获得的大选的胜利。)
Leg
"Leg"这个英语单词可能是英语学习者最初认识的一批单词中的一个，大家都知道它是"
腿"的意思，而在"Flying to Brussels on the second leg of his five-nation Euro
pean tour, Bush will take his case directly to the North Atlantic Treaty Org
anization's leaders in an appearance at the Western security alliance's head
quarters."这句新闻中, "leg"显然不是"腿"的意思。这句话的意思是："布什的欧洲五
国之行的第二站是布鲁塞尔，布什将直接在布鲁塞尔的西方国家安全联盟总部会见北约
领导人。"这里 "leg"的意思是"（旅程中的）一段"的意思， 在体育比赛中的"一段（赛
程）"也可以用 "leg"来表达，例如: "The final leg of the race is from Newcastl
e to Edinburgh." (赛程的最后一段是从纽卡斯尔到爱丁堡。)
Letter bomb

炸弹，邮件爆炸物 (a small bomb hidden in an envelope and sent by post to the
 person it is supposed to kill or harm); 那么"定时炸弹"又怎么说呢？ "time bo
mb"; 而由 "bomb" 组成的短语未必一定与"炸弹"有关，例如: " (go) like a bomb 意
思是(to go) very well （My new car goes like a bomb. 我的新车跑得很不错。）另
外spend/cost a bomb 意思是: to spend/cost a lot of money （花（值）很多钱）。
