思是"向某人（已去世）表示哀悼"， "on behalf of somebody"意思是"代表某人做……

for his entertaining speech."(我代表在座诸位，感谢我们的特邀嘉宾令人愉快的讲
话。)
Oil-for-food program
联合国秘书长发言人埃克哈德宣布，7月9日伊拉克同联合国正式签署了备忘录，将"石油
换食品"计划延长到11月30日。 外电有这样报道: "Iraq and the United Nations agr
eed on Monday to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) extending the oil-
for-food program that allows Iraq to export oil, U.N. spokesman Fred Eckhard
 said." "Memorandum of understanding" 意思是"谅解备忘录", 英文简称MOU, 其实我
们在平时的办公中用到的便笺、备忘录、也可以称为 "memorandum" 简称"memo"。"石油
换食品计划"英文则叫做 "oil-for-food program"。
Overshadow
Overshadow这个词很显然是over和shadow的复合词。Shadow这个词我们知道是"阴影"的
意思，那么overshadow最基本的意思就是"使（某物）被遮暗；使阴暗"，例如"a villa
ge overshadowed by mountains"。在此基础上，overshadow还有两个比喻意。一个是"
（某事物）令人不快或减少乐趣"，例如这个新闻标题"Middle East Tensions Oversha
dow Conference"（中东的紧张局势给大会蒙上了阴影）。另一个比喻意则是"使（某人
）相形见绌或黯然失色，例如：Despite her professional success, she was always
 overshadowed by her husband.
