Moonshine

Moonlight, 顾名思义，"月光"的意思，最初出现在乔叟的作品中。莎士比亚在他的《威
尼斯商人》（Merchant of Venice "How sweet the moonlight sleeps upon this bank
"）和《温莎的风流娘儿们》(Merry Wives of Windsor "Pinch him, and burn him,
and turn him about, till Candle, and Starlight, and Moonshine be out") 将这个
词拟人化。

15世纪中期的一位作家将 "moonshine" 赋予了新的意思， 他这样写到, "If Sir Thomas
Howys wer...made by leve and put in hope of the moone shone in the water
and I wot nat what." "Moonshine in water"和后来的 "moonshine"可以解释为"不真
实的东西"。16世纪， "to hang by the moonshine"用来表示"无缘无故的"，"毫无根据
的"。

"Moonshine"作为形容词，出现在斯威夫特《格列佛游记》中，"It being like a moon
shine night"此处的"Moonshine"有"月照的""有月光的"的意思。

虽然"Moonshine"现在表示在美国南部地区非法制造的谷物蒸馏烈酒，但"Moonshine"一
词用作这个意思，最早源于英格兰。在Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue (1785) 给"
Moonshine"一词解释如下: "A matter or mouthful of moonshine; a trifle, nothing.
The white brandy smuggled on the coasts of Kent and Sussex is called
moonshine."

走私者往往在夜晚或月下活动，而他们的主要走私物品被叫作"Moonshine"。 到19世纪
中期，这个单词传到美国，用来指非法酿造的烈酒，用以逃税或逃脱国家的一些规定。

"Moonlight" 在19世纪早期也用来表示"走私的烈酒"的意思， 但 "moonshine" 和
"moonlight"现在有了不同的意思。比如，"月光与玫瑰"，我们用 "moonlight and
roses" 来表达，而不说成"moonshine and roses"。

"Moonshiner"指酿造"moonshine"的走私者。"Moonlighter"指在工作以外的时间有第二
职业的人。在美国，它是一个没有任何贬义的词，而在英国则不同，往往指那些白天替
某个公司干活，晚上又替它的对手公司工作的不太讲商业道德的人。
