Neck of the woods

Today Show节目中的气象员Al Roker预报天气时经常说："And here's what's happening
in your neck of the woods." 想想看，他说的neck of the woods是什么地方？
Al Roker实际上是在作当地及附近地区的天气预报，neck of the woods是指附近地区，
附近一带。

大家都知道，许多没有生命的物体，如工具，瓶子，骨头，大炮和小提琴都有neck 。在
自然界中，neck不仅仅指"脖子"，还可以用来指一条长的水体，冰或树林。由此类推，
neck of the woods说的应该是一片长条状的森林。

Neck of the woods是个具有悠久历史的美语中特有的短语，它于美国早期拓荒者们生活
的地带有着密切的联系。

19世纪上半页，人们把位于边远森林地区的拓荒者的聚居地称做neck of the woods。
1839年的《泰晤士报》上第一次出现过这样的用法。在《美国风：新大陆英语》
（Americanisms: The English of the New World）一书中，De Vere这样描写一位美国
的拓荒者: "He will. . .find his neighborhood designated as a neck of the
woods, that being the name applied to any settlement made in the well-wooded
parts of the South-west especially"。

Neck of the woods在今天的英语中仍然非常活泼，而且不单单指边远地区的聚居地。它
现在可以用来指任何一社区或地区（any neighborhood, area or region）。有时候它
被简化成neck，例如: "what are you doing in this neck?" （你在这一带干什么？）
