whilom ("WHY-lem", or [rarely] "HWHY-lem") adj.
origin: from the Middle English phrase for "at times"
from the plural of the Old English, "hwil", meaning "time"
1. Having once been, former.
"The power of the ballot we need in sheer self-defense, and as a
guarantee of good faith. We may misuse it, but we can scarce do
worse in this respect than our whilom masters."
--W. E. Burghardt Du Bois, "Strivings of the Negro People" (1897)
2. [archaic] (as an adverb) At a past time, formerly.
"And, shuddering, still, may we explore,
Where oft whilom were captives pent,
The darkness of the Massy-More;
Or from thy grass-grown battlement,
May trace, in undulating line,
The sluggish mazes of the Tyne. "
