antebellum ("an-ta-BEL-um") adj

 origin: Latin from ante = "before, bellum = "war".

1. Occurring or existing before a particular war, esp. the
   American Civil War.

     "These people were not only serious about the Civil
      War, they were still fighting it. Every street bore
      a name like "Stonewall Jackson Boulevard" or "Robert
      E. Lee Avenue." Growing up as a rich girl in a town
      like this must have surely stamped antebellum values
