demotic ("dih-MOHT-ik") adj.
origin: from the Greek "demotes", meaning "a commoner"
1. Of or relating to the common people; popular.
"[U.S. Senator Phil] Gramm's hair does not shine, and his
Georgia accent is as thick as gumbo. Gramm's speech is
demotic. Only recently has Gramm's accent begun to thin;
he still often forgets his staff's advice to refer to his
