狼吞虎咽
wolf（狼）原是名词，可以引申为动词，意思是eat quickly and
greedily like a wolf（像狼一样急速而贪婪地吃）。这种用法
形象生动，与汉语的"狼吞虎咽"形容又猛又急吞咽食物的样子，
具有异曲同工之妙，例如：
1. He wolfed down one biscuit after another as though he
were starving. 他一块接一块、狼吞虎咽地吃饼干，好象他要饿死了。
2. He just wolfed his food; you'd think we didn't feed him
enough. 他吃东西简直是狼吞虎咽；你会以为我们没有给他吃够。
英语表示"狼吞虎咽"的动词还有：swallow（=let go down the
throat）；bolt（=eat too quickly）；gobble/guzzle（=eat
greedily, noisily and quickly）；gorge oneself on /gorge
oneself with/be gorged with(eat greedily）；scoff（=eat
eagerly and quickly）；devour（=eat greedily and hungrily）
等。这类动词的逻辑主语，即"吞食者"，大都为人。这类动词具有
"吃得快"（quickly），"贪婪"（greedily）和"发出响声"（noisily）
的特点，如：
1. We swallowed all out food and drink too quickly.
我们把所有的食物和饮料都吞得太快了。
2. He bolted a few mouthfuls of food and hurried out.
他吞吃了几口食物，就急忙出去了。
3. They gobbled all the food before I could get any.
没等我来得及吃，他们已吞掉了所有的食物。
4. She doesn't like watching her husband guzzling his food.
她不喜欢看她丈夫狼吞虎咽地吃东西。
5.He gorged himself on rich food. 他狼吞虎咽地吃丰盛的食物。
6. He gorged himself with twice as much as he normally ate.
他狼吞虎咽地吃了他平常所吃食物的两倍。
7. The fat man was constantly gorged with mountainous desserts.
这个胖子常常狼吞虎咽地吃大量食物。
8. He scoffed all the food and left none for us.
他狼吞虎咽地吃光食物，一点儿也没有给我们剩。
9. The hungry man was devouring his dinner.
这个饿汉子正在狼吞虎咽地吃饭。
吞食者可以是人，也可以是动物，例如：
1. A snake swallowed the frog. 一条蛇吞食了这个青蛙。
2. The chickens gobbled down the scattered breadcrumbs
in a twinkling. 转眼间，这些鸡飞快地吃光了撒下的面包屑。
3. The kittens devoured the whole plate of cat-food before
the dozing mother cat could stir. 这些小猫没等到打瞌睡的
老母猫醒过来，就把整盘猫食全部吃光。
吞食者如果是物，则具有比喻意义，例如：
1. Her figure was swallowed up in the fog.
她的身影消失在舞中。
2. The cost of living in the big city will gobble up your
entire salary. 这个大城市的生活费用会耗费掉你的全部薪水。
3. Fire devoured the building. 大火吞没了这座楼。
