拉家带口
有位美国人问一位三十岁左右的中国人：Do you have a family?
你有孩子吗？这位中国人理解为"你有家吗？"，也就是"你成家了吗？"，
连忙回答：Yes, I do.美国人以为他有孩子，进一步问：Do you have
a son or a daughter? 这位中国人还没有孩子，就问答：I have a
family. But I haven't any children.中国人答话前后矛盾，美国人
迷惑不解。问题的症结在于对family的词义，只知其一，不知其二。
family的第一个意思是any group of people related by blood or
marriage, especially a group of two adults and their
children, 在现代社会通常指父母与其未成年子女两代人组成的
小家庭，即核心家庭（nuclear family）；也可指三代人组成的
大家庭，即外延家庭（extended family），例如：
1. My family is very large. 我家人口很多。
2. A family of five live in that flat. 一个五口之家住在那所
公寓里。
3. My family are early risers. 我们全家人都起床很早。
family 所指范畴可扩大为具有同一祖先、历经许多代的同一家族，
即all those people descended from a common ancestor, 例如：
Our family has lived in this home for hundreds of years.
Now I've decided to start a family. 我已结婚五年。现决定要
生个孩子。
中国女友将start a family理解为建立家庭，误以为已婚五年的英国
女友要再婚，善意劝她不要重婚，闹了笑话。family 的第二个意思是
children, offspring，相当于汉语的"子女"只包括孩子，而不算父母。
a large family的意思不是"大家庭"，而是"子女很多"； a small
family的意思不是"小家庭"，而是"子女不多"。例如：
1. He has a large family. = He has many children. 他有许多
子女。
2. He has a family of three. = He has three children. =
He is a father of three. 他有三个子女。
3. Has he any family? = Has he any children? 他有孩子吗？
4. Tom is the eldest of the family. = Tom is the eldest
child. 汤姆是长子。
5. He is a man with a wife and a growing family. 他是个有
妻小的男子。
6. She brought up a small family. 她抚养的子女不多。
