hyponym (HIE-puh-nim) noun
A term that denotes a subcategory of a more general class: "Chair' and
"table' are hyponyms of "furniture.
[Hyp- + -onym, or as back formation from hyponymy]
"For example, the acceptability of `A dog is a kind of animal' is
interpreted to mean that `dog' is a hyponym of `animal'."
