gadget    
 
Definition: An impressive but unnecessary device or tool; any small 
object that does something. 
 
Example:  1) What's that new gadget you've got there, Jimbo? 
2) I found a gadget that works my stereo, VCR, and garage door!
 
 
Etymology: The word 'gadget' came into use in the 1800s, as factories 
started making more and more tools and strange little objects. It is 
derived from the French word 'gachette', which refers to a small 
mechanical part of a rifle or lock.
 
 
Synonyms:  thingamajig, doohickey
