downer    
 
Definition: Something or someone that is depressing; anything that makes
            one sad. 
 
Example:  1) Matt was a real downer last night -- all he could talk 
about were his problems. 
          2) It was a real downer to hear that all those kids got killed in the 
school bus accident.
 
 
Etymology: When you are filled with positive emotions and happy 
         thoughts, you are 'up'. When you are sad and depressed, you are 'down'
