miss the boat
Definition: To fail to take advantage of an opportunity.
Example: 1) I missed the boat in the tech sector -- I bought tech stocks after
prices had peaked.
2) Don't miss the boat -- I guarantee you that my investment approach will dou
ble your income within a year.
Etymology: This phrase was in use by the 1940s, and comes from the literal act
of missing a boat -- arriving at the dock after your boat has left.
