 AWOL

Definition: Absent without leave; an unexcused absence; to be missing from w
ork or an assignment.

Example: 1) Victor's gone AWOL. We haven't seen him since last Thursday.
2) Corporal Smithee has been AWOL since last night. The Major wants to talk 
to him.

Etymology: This term comes from military slang and refers to soldiers who de
sert their posts without orders.
