flunk
Definition: To fail a test; to perform poorly at something.
Example: 1) I flunked the final exam -- now I'll have to take that class aga
in!
2) Jeff flunked his driving test because he drove on the wrong side
of the r oad.
Etymology: 'Flunk' is probably a combination of the words 'flub' (which mean
s 'to do something incorrectly') and 'funk' (which means 'depression' or 'mi
sery'). The word also sounds like what it means (a word that sounds like wha
t it means is called an 'onomatopoeia') - when you drop a stone into water,
it sounds a lot like 'flunk', and when you fail a test, you feel like a rock
sinking to the bottom of the ocean.
