Definition: To make a romantic advance on someone; to flirt with someone. 

Example: 1) This guy in the bar wouldn't stop hitting on me. 

         2) I told Chris that he had better stop hitting on my girlfriend.  

Etymology: This phrase comes from student slang in the 1980s.
