Definition: Something that fails to operate correctly; someone or something th
at is boring or weak. 
Example: 1) Jimmy's rocket turned out to be a dud. 

2) The meeting was a real dud -- we didn't get anything accomplished.  
Etymology: 'Dud' is from World War I slang for a shell that failed to explode.
 Over time, the word came to refer to anything that doesn't work very well.
