I. In the Theater
The Westren theater and moving picture is a little different from the
Chinese theater so as to demand a more formal manner.
Firstly one should plan to be in one's seat at the time the play or
concert begins.
It is very rude to disturb people by coming in late. At concerts and
some plays you may not be allowed to go to your seat after the program has
started until there is an interval.
If you have tickets for definite seats, you should not try to find the
seats yourself, but wait for an usher to show you. In this case it is proper
for the lady to follow the usher and for the gentleman to come after the
lady.
When the seats are not reserved, there may or may not be anusher. If
there is no usher, it is polite for the gentleman to precede the lady down
the aisle to find suitable seats.
And one should never go out while the actores are on the stage or while
music is being played. During the performance it is impolite to talk or make
any noise. There one may not eat anything during the play, nor even between
acts in the main auditorium.
The movies are more informal. Any kind of respectable clothes may be
worn, and small confections amy be eaten quiely as long as there are no
objectionable noises to annoy one's neighbors.
It is better to be in your seat when it starts, but to be late to a movie
is excusable. One may also leave before the end if one goes quiely and does
not disurb others. In general one should not talk or make a noise in a movie,
but quiet whispering is perhaps permissible.
