IV. In Funeral
Funerals, of course, are always sad. But the tendency in Western
countries is against making any show of one's feelings at the funeral.
One may always send written messages or flowers with perfect propriety.
In sending flowers one may address them to one of the family, the sender
writing "With sympathy" on the card accompanying them.
Friend are careful not to show their sorrow too much, for this would
only increase the pain of the nearest relatives. Yet it is hardly possible
to avoid all sadness, and one should not try to be artificially cheerful.
It is not necessary at a funeral to speak to the bereaved persons at
all, unless one happens to come very close to them, when a pressure of
the hand, of a few low words of comfort or sympathy are enough. So it is
very different with Chinese custom, all forms of noise and excitement are
out of place, and a solemn quiet prevails.
The wearing of special mouring clothes is going out of syle in the West.
Not even black bands on the left arms of the men are considered necessary.
Many feel that the dead person would rather have them dress naturally and
go on as naturally as possible about their daily work.
