Story Three
"I shall Be an Everlasting Memorial of your Clemency"
As we mentioned to you before, there were lots of tribes established, includ
ing twelve large ones ranging from the top of what we now call Scotland to t
he Kent coast after Caesar left. In them there was one founded by Cunobelinu
s located around the south east of the island, and he built his capital at C
olchester. His wife gave births to two sons, Caractacus and Togodunmus, who
jointly governed this piece of land after his father's death and fought agai
nst the Roman commander Plautius. Plautius was sent to invade Britain by the
Emperor Claudius in 43 AD for political reasons. Leaving Britain for nearly
100 years from 54 BC to 43 AD, Romans came back, but they found Britons wer
e not wanting them.
Certainly, Caractacus and Togodunmus fought as best as they could, they hid
in forests and the swamps to make Plautius feel hard to find them out. At la
st, Romans found them out and Caractacus was defeated first, then Togodunmus
. Plautius continued his advance and reached a river. The Britons thought he
could not cross it for there was no bridge available, but Plautius sent a g
roup of Germans who were good at swimming easily in full armour to reach the
other side of it. A large number of Britons paid their lives as the price o
f their carelessness.
Caractacus escaped to the Welsh border and kept fighting another six years t
ill Ostorius, the successor of Plautius as the Roman commander, finally defe
ated him. He escaped again westwards again to a tribe named Brigantes, but t
he queen of the tribe handed him to the Romans. He was sent to Rome.
Next to his brothers, wife and daughter, he was standing in front of Claudiu
s, the mass in Italy was exciting and crazy about him so much because they h
ad never known anybody who was able to defend Rome's power. Caractacus began
his speech: "I should have entered this city rather as a friend than as a c
aptive. My resent lot, if to me a degradation, is to you a glory. If I were
dragged before you after surrendering without a blow, there would have been
little heard either of my fall or your triumph: punishment of mine will be f
ollowed by oblivion; but save me alive, and I shall be an everlasting memori
al of your clemency."
Eventually, he was freed as an honourable captive, and never came back to th
e island again.
