Story Five
A Blurred Period in History
The Romans left Britain in 410 AD, with most people who could read and write
, so in the following many years, there was no exact historic writings to te
ll us what was going on. Thanks a monk named Gildas, who wrote some poems in
this period, and another guy entitled the Venerable Bede, who was the autho
r of the Ecclesiastical History of the English People, we might be able to u
ncover the veil of this epoch a little bit.
As far as we know, there was a famous King Arthur, who dedicate himself to d
efending Saxons in six-century Britain. There are lots of tales about him, i
n which Knights of the Round Table is probably the most well known one. What
is equally, or more important for Britain is another monk, Columba, who cam
e to Britain in 565 and preached the word from God to people living on the i
sland. He passed over the Grampians-a rugged mountain to convert people livi
ng in the north of it, since the southerners had been converted by a Briton,
Bishop Ninian.
In 449 AD, a tribal king, Mercian, became the emperor with Valentinian, and
he invited the Angles, Saxons and Jutes into Britain who were of the three m
ost powerful nations of Germany. So, new conflicts were rooted, deaths would
be received, no end. But this time, the English, who did not come from Engl
and, would be the victors.
