Where the King Comes from?
In our previous stories, some tribal leaders were called kings or queens. Th
at is not their exact titles, even including King Arthur, but just using a r
espectful manner to call them. The real meaning of king had not been built u
p in men's brain until the invasion of the Angles, Saxons and Jutes into Bri
tain. There were altogether seven kings-bretwaldas, who founded their kingdo
ms on the south of the Humber. Bret means Britain and walda means ruler. All
of this happened probably in the final quarter of the fifth century. The fi
rst king was Alle. Still, no one spoke English at that time.
Actually in Germany, there were no kings. The Angles, Saxons and Jutes, thos
e original Germans, developed the name of king in Britain from leaders who d
eclared that their ancestors had been ancient gods. The position of the king
continued becoming more and more important on this island, and his supporte
rs and mates gradually formed a new class in society. As a king, he must pla
y double roles, both as a master and protector. It means that his supporters
and mates followed him in war and worked his land. In return, he must stand
by his people, feed them in famines, so on and so forth. In that period, to
make the king himself safe was the most important thing, so a king must gat
her a band of people around him, and he had nothing to gave them but land an
d titles! This is the basis of aristocracy.
However, there were limitations in the fifth- and sixth-century people could
travel, and there was no leader who had the army to conquer the whole islan
d, so there were more than one king on the island at the same time. And it w
as the war in 577 AD that expanded the hold of the Saxons over the south of
Britain, and it was this war that made the division of the south and the nor
th of the island, and affected the history of the island race, forever. From
the beginning of the movement of the Angles, Saxons and Jutes into Britain,
to the ninth century, the peoples south of the Humber were gradually under
control of the power of lesser kings. Little by little, Britons were forced
northwards, and those Germans became the host of the south of Britain.
