                            Story Seven
                   The Christianity into Britain

Though Columba (see Story Five) came and preached on the island beginning in
 565 AD, the Christians and heathens were still uneasily side by side. The P
ope in Rome understood what was happening on this island that once was a pro
vince of the Roman Empire. So in 595, he sent Augustine to Britain with many
 monks in order to convert heathens and preach God's word to the English nat
ion. Remember now, Britain was being called England.

However, Augustine and his monks were very afraid of their situation in Engl
and for from the beginning, they could not find any protections from local k
ings. That was very dangerous. So they wanted to go back. After encouraged b
y Pope Gregory's letter, they changed their minds and decided to keep going 
on. What was lucky for them was that they finally found the protection from 
Ethelberht in Kent. Ethelberht was not a Christian, actually he believed in 
the God of thunder, however his wife, a Frankish princess, Bertha, was. Beca
use of political, not spiritual needs, Ethelberht made up his mind to conver
t his belief, since people living around Kent were mostly affected by Rome a
nd Christianity. So with the aid of Bertha, Augustine converted him, and Eth
elberht became the first 'English' king to convert to Christianity. Using Ch
ristian belief as a slogan and working together closely with Augustine, Ethe
lberht soon became the most powerful king in the south and east of England. 
What we could sum up from this is that even from the start, religion has bee
n a political tool in England.

However, there was an interesting question. Those Celts also held another ve
rsion of Christianity, that differs from Augustine's in terms of how Easter 
should be observed and whether a kind of clothes in church should be worn. T
his question divided the peoples of mid-seventh century England as much as t
he feud between the English and the Britons. So how could this be worked out
?

As an example, the king of Northumbria Edwin, who was Ethelberht's son-in-la
w was the one who did not believed in any gods. Similar to his father-in-law
, he married a Christian wife, who controlled the first Roman monk preaching
 to Northern England in 625 AD, Paulinus. So Edwin was converted by him and 
became the overlord of the English kingdom except Kent. Again, it was a poli
tical decision rather than a spiritual one. Augustine's version was getting 
stronger and stronger.
