                              Story Eight
            Ethelbald and Offa-Two Powerful Midland Leaders

Because of different ideas about basic topics about Christianity, which was 
described in the last story, wars were unavoidable. It had not been worked o
ut until the leadership of Saxon England passed to Mercia-the Midlands. In t
he end, a decision was taken that the Church of Northumbria should be a defi
nite part of the Church of Rome and of the Catholic system. It means Mercia 
soon afterwards conformed, i. e., declared to obey this decision. In the fol
lowing eighty years, two Mercian kings became the most powerful figure all E
ngland south of the Humber, who were Ethelbald and Offa. Each governed forty
 years.

Ethelbald had been an exile before he became the king of Mercia, so he alway
s would like to show his kindness to the poor. He kept law and order, and he
 marked himself as 'King of the Southern English' and 'King of Britain'. It,
 however, was not a boast. He fought and won, as far ways as Somerton in Som
erset. It means that Ethelbald controlled a huge chunck of Wessex. One proof
 was that he could buy and sell lands there as he wished. He was the stronge
st figure in the southern Britain. Though he had been converted to Christian
ity, he was barbaric and though the church knew about it, they could do litt
le about him. What was only unlucky for him was that he was murdered by his 
bodyguard after his forty-year governing, and his natural successor was Offa
.

Offa was one of the most famous names in this period for his reputation was 
not only throughout England but also upon the European continent. He was giv
en the title of 'the First King of the English' and his sons and daughters g
ot married with Charlemagne's-the founder of the Holy Roman Emperor. More th
an that, he ordered to build up a 'Offa's Dyke' that runs over the hills and
 valleys, leaving gaps for forests, from the mouth of the Severn to the neig
hbourhood of the Mersay. This dyke sends us an idea of force of Offa's kingd
om as well as the manpower at that time. He even made the Britons-living on 
the north of the Humber-feel that keeping peace was better for them than bre
aking it. Offa died in 796 AD.
