Threats from Scandinavia
As a short summary, in the end of the eighth century, the dominant race in t
he south of this island was the Angles, Saxons and Jutes. They were called t
he English. From the Humber and its northern part, the Britons, i. e., the C
elts or the Scots had been living there since the Romans had left Britain in
the fifth century. Now, there was a new race coming to this island from the
north Europe-Scandinavia: Swedes, Norwegians and Danes, who were aiming to
take adventures here to find wealth because of their growth and the invasion
s of the Hun from Asia. They, in that period, were called the Vikings.
The first three ships landed onto the island at Portland in Dorset in 789 AD
. They killed many and went back. And they returned in 793 AD. In that year,
a token appeared over Northumbria and greatly frightened people there, whic
h, it was said, were strong winds and flashes of lightening and dragons flyi
ng in the air. A serious famine soon followed. In the next year, the Vikings
came back and landed at Jarrow but they were heavily attached by bad weathe
r as well as people living there. Their king was captured and put to a cruel
death. Others ran away and the English kept peaceful for forty years.
However, that was just a small group of ships from a huge fleet. Other ships
sailed northward and landed onto Ireland. They eventually conquered a small
community and it was thought that it was a Viking king, Olaf, that built up
what is now called Dublin.
In 865 AD, the Vikings came back again to the East coast of England. They lo
ved looting churches because the English believed in Christianity so much th
at they donated lots of treasure to them, and churches became stores for wea
lth. The bravest Viking king was called Ivar the Boneless whose father was o
nce killed by the English. He, and his three brothers swore to take vengeanc
e, but only he took the oath seriously.
He successfully landed onto the island and marched ahead along the old Roman
roads. In the nest year, he even crossed the Humber and besieged York, wher
e he ran into the Northumbrians. He was defeated at first but then, he fough
t back. The kings of the Northumbrians were killed in the battles and from t
hen on, the north of England never held any advantages.
No one knows the doom of Ivar the Boneless.
