STORY TWELVE
The Brother and Sister
In the late 800s and the early 900s, the map of the island looked something
like this: Wales was much as it is now. The boundary between Scotland and th
e Danish-controlled land, called Danelaw, was a wave-like line starting from
the North Sea coast, about thirty miles south of Durham, across to the Cumb
rian coast. The Merica (the Midland, esepcailly the part near to today's Liv
erpool) was under the control of Ethelred, and the Wessex Alfred, then his s
on, Edward.
Edward's succession to his father's throne-the position of king, aroused dis
satisfaction of his cousin, Ethelwald, who, after a quarrel with Edward, fle
d to East Anglia. He betrayed his native land, and in 902 AD, Ethelwald and
the Danish king crossed the upper reaches of the Thames and launch a new att
ack to the English. Edward, different from his father, decided to fight back
by invading into East Anglia. Generally speaking, the Danes won this battle
, but as fate would have it, both the Danish king and Ethelwald lost their l
ives in the battlefield. A new Danish king, Guthrum Ⅱ, made peace with Edwa
rd on the basis of Alfred's treaty of 886 AD. Unfortunately, this treaty was
broken by the Danes in 910 AD again, for which they paid the highest price.
Edward defeated them decisively in Staffordshire the Midland (Mercia). This
English victory was a milestone in the long conflict. The Danish armies in
Northumbria never recovered from the battle, what's more, the Danish Midland
s and East Anglia lay open to English conquest.
Edward had a sister called Ethelfleda, who married the Mercian leader, Ethel
red (See STORY Eleven). She became the queen of the Mercia after his husband
's death. So in the next ten years up to 921 AD, the brother and the sister
fought shoulder by shoulder, hand in hand. They took five main towns in East
Anglia. They continued achieving what their father had planned to do before
.
In 921 AD, Ethelfleda died at Tamworth, which is a town laying between what
we now call Birmingham and Derby. So, Edward took over all the power of the
Mercia under his control. He then advanced into Wales, the Welsh princes kne
w nothing could stop Edward so they surrendered. Now, the task started by Al
fred the Great was completed, and Edward died in 924 AD. In 925, his son, i.
e., the grandson of Alfred the Great, Athelstan, came to the throne. If som
ebody asks who the first king of all England was, then the answer is Athels
tan.
