Now what we can see is a picture of wars and blood. Kingdoms fought
against each other for land, wealth and people. However,some required
justice, peace and protection, which they could not obtain from the central
Zhou government. So five mighty kings emerged subsequently, one by one.
The first of them was King Huan (桓公)from the kingdom of Qi(齐).
When King Huan's father died, one of his brothers became his rival to
the throne. He defeated him and got an excellent benchman from his group,
Mr. Zhong Guan (管仲). He appointed him the Primie Minister, and it was
Zhong Guan that proposed a long-term strategy--to be a Mighty King, which
meant helping minor and poor countries in defence, and achieve a general
mutual understandings between kingdoms in the name of the king of Zhou
Dynasty.
King Huan, his name was Xiaobai Jiang (姜小白), took his Prime Minister's
idea and put it into reality. He first help the kingdom of Yan (燕) defeat
babarians from the north, then collected the surplus of people from the
kingdom of Wei (卫) after it had been destroyed by the kingdom of Zheng (郑)
and assisted them to establish a new home. He even threatened another strong
kingdom in the shouth, Chu (楚) for her wrongdoing in the six-century BC when
a king of Zhou Dynasty attacked her. Though Xiaobai Jiang actually did not dae
to be in war with Chu, he succeeded in making Chu admit her mistakes.
Due to King Huan's achievments, he expanded Qi's reputation and became an
overlord around Zhou Dynasty. After him, the kingdom of Jin (晋),Qin (秦),Chu
and Wu (吴) would follow his trace.
