"WARRIORS of Heaven and Earth", the eagerly anticipated new film by He Ping,
had its star-studded world premiere at the Forbidden City in Beijing on
Tuesday night.
The movie, directed by the award-winning He Ping, is the most hyped release
of the year so far, and has already been chosen as China's official foreign
language Oscar entry at the 2004 Academy Awards in the US.
It's also been selected to open the 16th Tokyo International Film Festival
this November.
Writer and director He Ping is the pioneer of the "Chinese western? a genre
which has brought literary epics that focus on China's vast and unpopulated
western territories to the screen, places where Chinese and Buddhist culture
have mixed for centuries. His previous epic westerns include the 1990 Berlin
International Film Festival hit "Swordsman of Double Flag Town?(Shuangqizhen
Daoke).
He got the idea of shooting a movie set in China's deserts as far back as
1984. The plot of "Warriors of Heaven and Earth?did not really form in He's
mind though until 2000 when he found the perfect, deserted location for the
film in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
After a year of preparation, he finally began the six month shoot in August
2001.
Post-production work on the film took him more than a year. Especially hard
was finding the right musician to do the movie's soundtrack.
Jolin Cai (Cai Yilin) was eventually given the job, and didn't disappoint
providing the suitably epic theme song, "Flyaway?(Haishi Shenlou).
An epic adventure set during the Tang Dynasty, "Warriors of Heaven and
Earth?embraces the style and scope of the classic American Western, telling
the story of a moral conflict between two opposing warriors: one a rebellious
officer, the other a bounty hunter sent to kill him.
The two find themselves however in a tense alliance trying to deliver a
treasure to the Emperor and forced to re-examine their vendetta or face
annihilation in the unforgiving Gobi Desert.
"Warriors..." stars two of China's most popular actors: Jiang Wen and Vicky
Zhao (Zhao Wei), along with Japanese star Nakai Kiichi.
Jiang Wen plays Lieutenant Li.
A warrior by profession, Li spends his youth and early adulthood serving in
the army of the Tang Emperor.
Until, that is, he's ordered to massacre a group of prisoners ?all women and
children. Li, along with his men, mutiny, killing a loyal Tang officer in the
ensuing fight.
As a result, Li, once one of the Tang army's most celebrated soldiers, is now
the most wanted criminal in the wild western territories.
The emperor dispatches a strong swordsman, Lai Xi (Nakai Kiichi), to track
him down. But Lai and Li postpone their battle when they learn that the
caravan they are guarding is carrying a mysterious relic with mystical powers
?and it's destined for the Emperor himself.
Vicky Zhao plays Wen Zhu, the daughter of a high ranking general in the army
of the Tang Court.
Her father entrusts Lai to bring her back to the safety of the capital. But
Lai receives urgent orders from the Emperor himself, to track down and kill
Li. So he brings Wen Zhu along on his adventure. It's a detour which will
cause Wen Zhu to search for the warrior within herself.
The film is distributed in China by Xiying & Huayi and will be distributed by
Columbia Tristar in the rest of the world, except for North America where
Sony will distribute it.
The film will go on general release on National Day and will play on 240
screens across China.
It is currently on limited release in six Chinese cities: Beijing, Chengdu,
Guangzhou, Shanghai, Shenyang and Xi'an.
