BUSILY CHECKING IN luggage for the large airline where I work, I
   asked every traveler, "Is this your suitcase?" before proceeding. At the
   peak of the afternoon rush, one man hesitated after my inquiry and replied,
   "No, it's my brother-in-law's -- but he said I could use it."

   I USED TO WORK at an airport's baggage-claim area. One afternoon I
   unloaded some arriving luggage onto the carousel conveyor belt. A few
   seconds later the belt jammed when the first suitcase wedged itself at one
   of the turns. After I yanked the bag free, the conveyor started again, and
   the only way out was for me to ride the belt up to the carousel. I sat with
   the suitcase on my lap to make sure it wouldn't cause any more problems.
   As I slid by on the carousel, a passer-by yelled, "Next time, go first class!"

   ON A FLIGHT my father took to Washington, D.C., the strong wind along
   the Potomac River made it difficult for the pilot to land the plane. After
   two attempts, the aircraft was circling for another try. My father noticed
   that the passenger beside him had a white-knuckled grip on the armrests.
   A frequent flier, Dad thought he would reassure him. "Don't worry," my
   father said to him. "Those people in the cockpit know what they're doing."
   "You don't understand," the man replied. "I'm a commercial pilot, and I
   know what they're doing!"

   A fellow pilot flying over the midwest heard an air- traffic controller trying
   to contact an airliner for a normal frequency change. "Flight 354," said the
   controller, "Contact Kansas City Center on frequency 135.5." The request
   was repeated several times, with no reply from the pilot. Finally, in
   exasperation, the controller raised his voice. "Flight 354, Simon says
   contact Kansas City Center on frequency 135.5." The call was
   acknowledged with an embarrassed reply and prompt compliance.

   AFTER an uneventful flight, the plane on which I was a flight attendant
   landed at New York's JFK Airport. Our captain, new to the New York
   run, steered us off the runway, onto the taxiway and stopped. Slowly we
   began taxiing, first pivoting to the right, then to the left. Soon the aircraft
   stopped, turned completely around and stopped again. Finally, over the
   public-address system, a confused voice asked, "Does anyone know where
   Gate 25 is?"
