3. Cause and Effect
3.1 A cause is what makes something happen. An effect is what happens
because of the cause. In discussing cause and effect we are discussing
why things happen.
3.2 Cause-and-effect essays tend to fall into two basic types: those in
which you proceed from cause to effect and those in which you move from
effect to cause. Cause and effect sequences fall into relatively simple
patterns.
3.3 The basic purpose of a cause-and-effect paragraph or essay is to
explain why a condition exists. Although some causes and effects are so
complex that they require an entire paper to explain, simpler cause-and-effect
3.4 Cause and effect is related to narration and to process because all
three are concerned with chronological progression. But in cause and
effect, you are more interested in the WHY than in the WHAT or the HOW.
Cause and effect exposition is a special form of exposition that
presents a step by step description of associated sequences of events.
Something more than just contiguity is involved in the process.
