North by Northwest
Thriller, Comedy, 1959: 136 minutes
A MGM/UA Pictures Release
"Maggie, you ought to know that in the world of advertising
there's no such thing as a lie--there's only the expedient
exaggeration."
From the moment he is mistaken at a New York hotel for the nonexistent
George Kaplan, Cary Grant falls through the looking-glass in North by
Northwest, becoming a pawn in an absurd yet nightmarishly suspenseful
comedy of errors. Alfred Hitchcock's droll direction makes this the
most perfect of his chase films, with Grant impeccably witty as
advertising man Roger O. Thornhill. Eva Marie Saint's sensitive
portrayal of the spy who loves him gives her a place of honor in the
ranks of Hitchcock's cool, mysterious blondes, and the villains in
Ernest Lehman's marvelous script are played with smooth malice by
James Mason and Martin Landau. --Joseph McBride

Yesterday, all my trouble seemed so far away
Now, it looks as though they are here to stay
Oh, I believe in yesterday !
