Citizen Kane

       "Rosebud." 
 
Who cares whether Orson Welles or Herman Mankiewicz is most 
responsible for this film's Oscar-winning script; it remains the 
greatest screenplay ever penned. Loosely based on the life of press 
baron William Randolph Hearst, the picture, through a series of 
piquant flashbacks, tells the story of the rise and fall of Charles 
Foster Kane. This tumultuous life is surely a metaphor for all that is 
great and dreadful about the American experience, but Welles and his 
exceptionally gifted co-creators never preach. In addition to Welles's 
astonishing performance in the lead, Joseph Cotten, Dorothy Comingore, 
Everett Sloane, and George Coulouris lend color and flair. Bernard 
Herrmann's excellent score, Gregg Toland's trenchant cinematography, 
and Van Nest Polglase's atmospheric set design only add to the
