       "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn." 
 
This three-and-a-half-hour Best Picture Oscar winner, a wistful look 
at the Old South before, during, and after the Civil War, is the 
quintessential American epic. The spectacle remains unforgettable: 
thousands of wounded soldiers, laid out as far as the eye can see; a 
horse and carriage dwarfed, silhouetted, by a building monstrously 
aflame; big, blood-red, expressionistic skies. But the film is so 
well-loved because of the characters: Scarlett O'Hara (Best Actress 
winner Vivien Leigh), a conniving bitch we cannot help but love for 
her beauty and resilience; her star-crossed lover, the scoundrel Rhett 
Butler (Clark Gable), whose cynicism is matched by his decency; and 
Scarlett's old black mammy (Oscar winner Hattie McDaniel), the
