Chinatown
Noir, Thriller, 1974: 131 minutes
A Paramount Pictures Release
"Forget it, Jake, it's Chinatown."
In Robert Towne's Academy Award-winning screenplay (considered by many
to be the most perfect ever written), Chinatown is a metaphor for the
tangled coil of powerful--and untouchable--people and interests who
ultimately controlled things in mid-thirties Los Angeles. Jack
Nicholson is Jake Gittes, the wisecracking gumshoe hired to get the
goods on a cheating husband; soon he's neck-deep in murder,
conspiracy, and sexual deviance. While noir in theme, Roman Polanski's
film is bathed in production designer Richard Sylbert's deceptively
sumptuous yellows. Faye Dunaway is brilliant in a graceful, tightly
wound performance, while John Huston is jovially menacing and
horrifyingly effective as tycoon Noah Cross. --Carmel Dagan

Yesterday, all my trouble seemed so far away
Now, it looks as though they are here to stay
Oh, I believe in yesterday !
