"When the legend becomes fact, print the legend," a frontier newspaper 
editor famously proclaims in John Ford's The Man Who Shot Liberty 
Valance. But Ford does just the opposite, exposing and satirizing the 
bombastic lies that have become accepted as the history of the West. 
An embittered fable about the price America paid in turning a 
wilderness into a garden, Liberty Valance stars John Wayne as the 
loner whose violent act becomes the legendary cornerstone in the 
career of a fraudulent politician (James Stewart). With its ironic 
debunking of national mythology, Liberty Valance prefigures the
