Robert De Niro went all out to make boxer Jake La Motta--the raging 
bull of the title--a living, breathing, immortal figure in the minds 
of moviegoers. Director Martin Scorsese, doing some of the best work 
of his already-breathtaking career, gives him ample room--and draws 
greatness out of him. Filmed in black and white (perfectly capturing 
the tabloid look with which our culture disposes us to remember the 
forties and fifties), Raging Bull tracks La Motta's career from his 
lean early days, when no one could beat him, to his hard afterlife as 
a survivor of fame--fat, still furious, but making a living doing 
Brando imitations in seedy nightclubs. It's an amazing life story, and 
Scorsese and De Niro do it justice. --F.X. Feeney
