To Have and Have Not 
 
War, Noir, Romance, 1944: 100 minutes 
A Warner Bros. Pictures Release 
 
       "You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your 
lips together and blow." 
 
Director Howard Hawks told Ernest Hemingway he could make a good movie 
out of his worst novel. Hemingway was incensed, but Hawks was right. 
To Have and Have Not uses Hemingway's protagonist, the hard-boiled 
but idealistic privateer Harry Morgan, as a mere springboard for a 
colorful melange of comedy, romance, and adventure set in wartime 
Martinique. Although the movie owes as much to Casablanca as to the 
novel, Hawks' primary interest is not in the background of political 
intrigue involving boat captain Morgan's aid to the French Resistance, 
but in the budding relationship of Humphrey Bogart and sultry young 
Lauren Bacall, whose captivating insolence in her screen debut made
