Noir, Mystery, 1941: 100 minutes

       "When you're slapped, you'll take it and like it." 
 
Dashiell Hammett's classic pulp noir novel had been indifferently 
filmed twice before, but this version is a masterpiece. 
Writer-director John Huston's adaptation sports a juicy, quick-witted 
script and colorful characters: Humphrey Bogart's detective Sam Spade, 
a ruthlessly sluttish Mary Astor, and the ever-oily pair of Sidney 
Greenstreet and Peter Lorre. Everyone's after the priceless black 
statuette of the title and out to cross everyone else; the number of 
shifting alliances is dizzying! Bogart's scowling, misogynistic Spade 
is a fascinating character, always looking out for number one but 
motivated by a sense of duty to find his partner's killer. --Carmel
